FOUNDING DECLARATION OF “PANATHINAIKOS ALLIANCE 2012”
The association of Panathinaikos fans “Panathinaikos Alliance 2012”, as established on May 3rd 2012, in Athens, is the expression of simple, direct and true will by millions of PAO fans to take over the team’s fate, by applying an already successful pattern in our country. Their goal is to bring Panathinaikos back to the place it should be: on the top of European football. We, Panathinaikos fans, come from different social and professional backgrounds and different generations. However, we are connected by something strong: the love for this unique football club. That’s why, we have decided today to join powers.
Our team has been suffering from an unprecedented financial and administrative crisis, never faced before during his glorious history. Hours could be spent on justifying this crisis, but that would be of minor importance. With Panathinaikos’ financial and athletic degradation getting closer and closer, its shareholders being divided and the problems keeping unfailingly increasing, we must not and we will not let Panathinaikos alone.
Panathinaikos has always been a pioneer. It was the first club that broke the narrow limits of Greece, the first one to bring foreign coaches to teach on football techniques, made use of lawn in greek pitches, acquired a modern coaching center and academies; it was the first greek team of European level and with European perspectives, the first one which established an organized union of fans, “Gate 13”. Panathinaikos, once more, keeps one step ahead. It becomes the first club that introduces the model of a popular base team, a team funded by its own fans, in proportion to their potential. At the same time, it entitles its fans to participate in the administration of Panathinaikos, under the principles of democracy and parity.
This Association aims at creating an autonomous forum for promoting dialogue, expression, information sharing and action by all Panathinaikos fans.
Our priority is to ensure the stability of Panathinaikos ownership status, the financial viability and prosperity of the Football Club and to safeguard and preserve Panathinaikos’ cultural inheritance and tradition. Our intention is to achieve the equal participation of all Association members in Panathinaikos Administration.
Our vision is to bring Panathinaikos back to the place it should be: on the top of Greece at the very least….
The rebirth of Panathinaikos is based on the same principles, which back since 1908 have been making this team so special. To this end, we name this association after its founder, i.e. Georgios Kalafatis.
Our Association is based on the following principles:
- Panathinaikos has been always promoting “fair play”. Football and sports are more than a simple game. They create powerful social bonds. The team is not just a Sunday event. It is a collective identity that offers its fans much more than a simple joy of victory. It provides the joy of belonging into a group of people who share their mutual love for a team that wants to deservingly win or lose in the pitch; a team that strongly opposes to the twin plague of corruption and violence that the greek football has been facing. Panathinaikos is consistently fighting for re-establishing athletic institutions, financially and institutionally reorganizing the greek football and eliminating violence in sports facilities. Taking part in violent actions is incompatible with Panathinaikos membership.
- Panathinaikos has been a champion. Ever since its foundation, the club has been a beacon for greek sports, a nursery of big talents, a feeder of national teams, a leader. Its most prominent eras were marked by great greek football players who always dreamed of international distinctions. Panathinaikos is a team that depends on greek athletic talents.
Panathinaikos has always been a european team. Panathinaikos’ ambition to play an important role in the highest European leagues is an inextricable part of the team’s identity. Panathinaikos will always and unfailingly try to assert international distinctions.
We add one more principle:
Panathinaikos is a team based on its fans, based on the persons who strongly love the colors and the history of that team. We, Panathinaikos friends, form an association with a view for thousands of fans to participate in the team’s funding and administration.
Panathinaikos fans participate by their contributions in the funding of a robust and powerful club, deserving of its history and the high expectations of its fans. Panathinaikos fans become entitled to participate in its administration, by electing their representatives, with equal voting rights, regardless of the amount of their financial participation. Our goal is for the financial management to abide by the rules of good corporate governance, with accountability and transparency. In addition, we aim at a democratic and professionally exercised administration, accountable to team fans. Finally, our goal is to continually upgrade the team’s athletic goals.
There is nothing lying behind this association but the obvious: the love of Panathinaikos fans for the biggest and most prominent football club in Greece.
This project has never been attempted in Greece before but it has been already successful abroad. Hundreds of European clubs belong to those who should be in charge: their fans, far from personal goals, interests and intentions. Panathinaikos Alliance is not a matter of one person but a matter of ALL Panathinaikos fans. The Football Club should be administered by ALL of its fans and not just one person. Its future should lay on decisions taken by ALL of us. We therefore urge all Panathinaikos fans to take part in a mutual, unconditional effort to preserve the idea and the history of Panathinaikos. The path shall be long and hard and at this point, there are no rabbits in our hats to make things right. The time has come for all Panathinaikos fans to stand by the team of our heart:
